Description

Collection comprises of the diaries kept by Convoy Signalman (Con Sigs) Tasman Phillips between December 1939 and March 1944. In his capacity as a convoy signalman Phillips served aboard ships of the Royal Navy, Royal Australian Navy and Merchant Navy. Generally Phillips and another signalman would be assigned to a particular ship in a convoy, often one of the Merchant ships, to assist with communication between ships in the convoy. Phillips' diaries cover his voyages with the first convoy of troops which left Australia for Europe in January 1940; with Convoy US5A in September and October 1940 and with various troop and supply convoys sailing between Aden and Colombo or Durban and between Alexandria and Piraeus in Greece. From December 1941 Phillips was based in Australian waters, first at HMAS Rushcutter, then sailing with convoys between Australian ports. A menu from a resturant in Marseilles collected by Phillips in 1940 is held in the Memorial's souvenir collection, item 13/4/44.
