Kota Bharu, Malaya. 1941. The quarters of Corporal Athol Blake, of No.8 Squadron RAAF, on the verandah of the airmen's living quarters at RAF Kota Bharu. Photographs and other personal items are arranged on the table and wall shelves. There is a single bed with a mosquito net strung from the ceiling above. A .303 Lee Enfield rifle with bayonet is hanging on the wall. At rear is a gas mask bag hanging from the window frame. The RAAF had two General Reconnaissance Squadrons flying Lockheed Hudson aircraft in Malaya. No. 1 Squadron was stationed at RAF station Kota Bharu, No. 8 Squadron was stationed at RAF station Kuantan. The Squadrons were forced to retreat, along with the allied forces, in the face of the Japanese attack.
