Description

Rabaul, New Guinea, 1945-10. A long thatch-roofed hut stands on the shores of a bay at a former Japanese prisoner-of-war (POW) camp for captured Indian soldiers of the 1st Hyderabad Regiment. A flagpole made from a sapling stands at centre, while spelled out on the ground in front of it in seashells or white stones are the words: '1st Hyderabad'. Several Australian soldiers, members of a recovery party which is in the process of liberating the camp and its inmates from the Japanese, are standing on guard at the rear of the flagpole.
