Description

Garoka, New Guinea, 1945-11. Aerial view of the RAAF Aircrew Rest Camp known as 'Lamana', meaning 'Eternal Springs', which is located in the highlands at an altitude of 5,000 feet. The camp features dormitories or sleeping huts set among elaborate gardens in which purple, green and yellow shrubs have been grown in a variety of patterns, including the RAAF wings, the Union Jack and the flags of Australia, the United States and the USSR. At top stands an airstrip and, beside it, a small Australian New Guinea Administrative Unit (ANGAU) base.
