Description

Melbourne, Vic. 1946. Photograph of a portrait painted in oil on canvas by the artist Robert Hofmann. The portrait is of Mrs Thomas Walter White OBE (nee Vera Deakin), daughter of the former Australian Prime Minister Alfred Deakin. White is wearing the uniform of the Victorian Divisional Commandant of the Australian Red Cross (ARC). White established the Wounded and Missing Bureau in Cairo, Egypt, in 1915 for the ARC and during the second world war she organised the Melbourne branch of the Bureau. She later became the Vice Chairman of the ARC. Vera White became Lady White in 1952 when her husband, Thomas Walter White DFC VD MP, was knighted while Australian High Commissioner in the United Kingdom. (Donor J. Harley)
