Description
Death Valley, Chuam-ni, Korea, 1951-02-17. A damaged US Army M24 Chaffee light tank which was overrun when, on the night of 1951-02-12 and 1951-02-13, Chinese Communist forces attacked a force consisting of L Company of the 9th US Regiment and the Reconnaissance Company of the 2nd US Division. A member of the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), is peering into one of the tank's hatches. The figure lying on the bank in the foreground is probably another Australian of 3RAR examining the tank's suspension and tracks. At right, the helmet of an American soldier lies discarded in the snow. The tank was repaired and adopted by the Mortar Platoon of 3RAR until the Americans reclaimed it several weeks later. (Donor I.
