Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of one manuscript of Squadron Leader Rex Donald Daniell. This manuscript, titled ‘Reminisces of 117 Squadron’ was written by Squadron Leader Daniell in March 1987. In his manuscript, Squadron Leader Daniell writes about the history of 117 Squadron. He includes descriptions of the commanding officers and squadron members, the multi-national crews (including Australians and New Zealanders), the transport of supplies throughout Africa, the aircraft, aircraft getting lost on route, search and rescue operations, evacuating civilians from Malta, the loss of crews during operations, the movement of the squadron to Italy and then India, transporting and training with paratroopers, the unit’s relocation to Burma, and air dropping supplies to Allied troops. Squadron Leader Daniell also includes many anecdotes of eventful flights taken by crews in 117 Squadron. Additionally, this manuscript contains one page of news relating to other veterans of 117 Squadron and their families. This copy of the manuscript was collected by Mrs Frida McLean, widow of 406112 Wing Commander William John McLean.
