Collection relating to the Second World War service of Charles Fanning Gye, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force, Australia, c1980s.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of one manuscript by Charles Fanning Gye, relating to his service in Bomber Command with the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. This manuscript was written by Gye in the early to mid 1980s as part of a creative writing course in Western Australia. In his manuscript, Gye refers to his experience of flying in a bombing operation targeting an oil refinery near Leipzig, Germany. He writes in detail about the operation briefing, the crew’s preparations, take off, serving as part of a multi-national crew (including English, Welsh, Scottish, Canadian, Scottish, New Zealander and Australian crewmembers), interactions between crewmembers during the flight, flying over enemy territory through anti-aircraft artillery, being targeted by a German night-fighter, witnessing the loss of other aircraft, safely returning to base, and debriefing. Gye also includes a footnote, giving details of his crew and their deaths during an operation in November 1944.
