Description
RAF Station Shawbury, Shropshire, England. C. 1945-05. The British built Lancaster aircraft "Aries" (PD328), which flew round the world on a navigational mission to the Pacific in the autumn of 1944, is now being used in a series of flights over the geographical and magnetic North Pole. The flights are being made mainly to study navigation in Polar conditions and to examine the behaviour of certain equipment. The expedition, which is from the Empire Air Navigation School of RAF Flying Training Command at Shawbury, is led by Wing Commander D. C. McKinley DFC AFC (facing camera), in conversation whilst "Aries" is being refuelled.
