Description

NT. 1939-07-14. On 1939-07-10 a survey party from Darwin Mobile Force left Vestey's Barracks with rations and fuel for three weeks in a Ford three ton truck and a motorcycle. The party travelled south on the Adelaide road for approximately 120 kilometres then turned west intending to survey the land between the Adelaide road and the coast. After reaching the coast the party travelled north east and returned to Darwin. A memorial, made from bush timber and galvanized tin sheet, listing all the members of the Darwin Mobile Force survey party exercise to Bynde Harbour. The memorial reads "14/7/39, Darwin Mobile Force Survey Party passed here" with the names inscribed below; Lieutenant F. G. Hassett; Warrant Officer 2 Fawcett; Sergeant J. F. McWilliams; Corporal A. J. F. Gaul; Lance Corporal J. Gibson; and Gunners; L. P. Williams; R. Sinclair; C. C. Ellis; A. D. Elbourne. Also inscribed are the names of the three aborigines who accompanied them; Jackie, Jimmy and Lawrence.
