Description

Collection relating to the Boar War service of 479 Trooper Albert James Haines, 5th South Australian Imperial Bushmen, Australia, at sea and South Africa, 1901.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of one handwritten copy of a diary of Trooper Albert James Haines, containing entries dated between February and October 1901. The original diary was written during Trooper Haines’ embarkation from Australia and service with 5th South Australian Imperial Bushmen in South Africa. In his diary, Trooper Haines writes about his enlistment, embarking on SS Ormazon, daily duties, life on board the ship, the welfare of the horses on the ship, weather conditions and participating in training. On landing in South Africa, he writes about travelling by train to their camp, going on patrols, skirmishes with Boer guerrillas, travelling on horseback, camping, capturing prisoners of war, gathering food, and British and Boer casualties. This handwritten copy of the diary is believed to have been produced by Trooper Haines’ wife, Mrs Agnes Helen ‘Nellie’ Haines, several years after his return to Australia.
