Martini-Metford Mk I Rifle : South Australian Infantry
Description
Martini-Metford Mk I Rifle. Single shot lever action marked Crown over VR over B.S.A&M.Co II and arrow SA 604 S (right side) and H.R.B Co over 1892 over M .303 on the left. It has a wooden butt and fore end held to the barrel by two bands. the end cap incorporates a bayonet lug. The rifle is complete and has a brown leather sling.
History / Summary
This rifle is one of about 400 Martini Metford rifles purchased by the South Australian Government in the 1890's. It is a conversion from a Mk II Martini Henry rifle to a Martini Metford Mk I rifle by the Henry Rifle Barrel Company in 1892. The bayonet for this rifle is the Pattern 1888 Mk I, as for the Lee Metford rifle.
