Description
England. 1942-08-14. Returning from a raid on Germany an aircraft of RAF Bomber Command was attacked by an Messerschmitt Bf109. Although most of his instruments were shot away, the pilot, an Australian, flew his aircraft to within five miles of his station when the petrol supply ran out. He gave orders to his crew to bale out and five of them landed safely. The aircraft was then so low that the pilot was unable to escape himself; but he managed to land the aircraft in a "ride" in a thickly-wooded plantation. Later he and the crew met at the station in the early hours of the morning - all safe. Portrait of the pilot being congratulated on his feat.
