'Harry Chauvel' transports unserviceable tanks DPR/TV/1343
The Army's soldier-sailors and its 'iron men' combined recently to show the growing flexibility of the Army in South Vietnam. Aboard the landing-ship Harry Chauvel were men of the Royal Australian Engineers...ashore were troops of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps, and their mechanical engineers. Their job: to embark two Centurion armoured vehicles aboard the landing-ship to be returned to Australia for a major overhaul. The landing-ship was used to avoid disrupting traffic through congested villages and hamlets between Nui Dat and the coastal port and seaside resort of Vung Tau. After a tortuous trip up the winding maze of rivers from Vung Tau, the landing-ship berthed just south of the Phuoc Tuy Province capital of Baria - and embarked the two 50-ton giants within 30 minutes.
