Proserpine, QLD, 1944. Interior of the sleeping quarters for members of the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS) who were serving with the 1st Field Trials Company, Royal Australian Engineers (RAE), at the Australian Field Experimental Station. The unit, formerly the Australian Chemical Warfare Research and Experimental Section, carried out research on the effects of mustard gas and other chemical warfare agents. It was based at the station from 1944-05.
