Description
Noumea, New Caledonia, 1943-01-20. The United States Navy (USN) Escort Aircraft Carrier USS Chenango (CV-28) at anchor off Noumea. Aircraft on the flight desk include seven Douglas SBD Dauntless, wings not folded; four Gruman F4F Wildcats in a line on the starboard side beside the rear aircraft lift, and six Grumman TBF Avengers arranged around the rear aircraft lift. The USS Chenango was originally laid down as the fleet oiler Esso New Orleans and with three other ex oilers was converted to a Sangamon Class Escort Aircraft Carrier. (Donor P.
