Graduation parade, Scheyville DPR/TV/935
The Minister for the Army, Mr Phillip Lynch, was the reviewing officer at a graduation parade at the Army's Officer Training Unit at Scheyville (Pron Sky-vill) near Windsor, NSW, recently. The Unit trains selected National Servicemen and potential Army pilots as commissioned officers. Sixty-four young men graduated as second lieutenants on this parade, bringing the total who have been commissioned from Scheyville since it was opened in 1965 to seven hundred and fifty-nine. After the cadets had marched passed the Minister, the Graduating Class slow-marched through the Junior class which presented arms. After marching from the parade ground, the Graduating Cadets returned to receive their Commission's and prizes. Winner of the Governor General's medal for being first in his class was Mervyll Reid of Melbourne, Vic. He marched smartly up to receive his prize from Mr Lynch. Another of the main prizes, the Sword of Honour, awarded by the Military Board for exemplary conduct, was presented to David Knaggs of Greenwich, NSW. Among the proud parents who went to the parade from all over Australia was the Administrator of Papua-New Guinea and his wife, Mr and Mrs David Hay. Their son, Andrew, graduated eighth in his class and has been posted as an infantry officer. And after the parade, Mervyll Reid proudly shows his medal to his wife and his mother-in-law. At Scheyville, new officers for the Australian Army complete their training.
