Description
Studio portrait of 1174 Private Herbert Leslie Lenham, 53rd Battalion. An Indigenous serviceman, Lenham was born at Woonona, NSW, and enlisted at Newcastle, aged 22 years and 7 months. He was a coal miner prior to enlistment.
After the war he lived in a Redfern boarding house, where he met Sylvia Idylene May Jessop, who was separated from her husband, and whose mother ran the boarding house. The couple married in 1938. After being gassed during the war, he was unlucky enough to be gassed again through his employment at the Water Board. Lenham died on 31 March 1979.
