The Army today opened its first display of captured Viet Cong weapons in the Monaro Shopping Mall, Canberra, ACT. Malcolm Miller, left, 13 of Griffith, ACT and Robert Pettit, 13 of Deakin, ACT, talked over the weapons with 15757 Sergeant Malcolm John Ezzy while Mrs Margaret Towse of Hughes, ACT, talked over a Viet Cong flag with 36587 Captain Barry John Caligari. Both Captain Caligari and Sergeant Ezzy are members of 7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, which captured the weapons. The 7th Battalion, from April 1967 until April this year were involved in more than 30 battalion sized or larger operations in Vietnam and during this time captured over 300 weapons. The 30 on display ranging from a 75 millimetre recoilless rifle down to infantry rifles, machine carbines, machine guns, pistols, rockets and directional mines, represented every small arms weapon used by Viet Cong or North Vietnamese units. The display finishes on Friday next.
