Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX130117 Private Milton Richard Jarvis, 2/9 Australian Infantry Battalion, Second Australian Imperial Force, Australia and New Guinea, 1942-1943.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of three letters from Private Milton Richard Jarvis to his mother, Mrs Agnes Jarvis (née Irwin), dated 26 [October 1942], 13 December 1942 and 2 January 1943. These letters were written during Private Jarvis’ service with 2/9 Australian Infantry Battalion in Australia and New Guinea. In his letters, Private Jarvis writes about life in the camp, participating in training, preparing for overseas service, and acclimatising to life in New Guinea. On the reverse of the final letter, Private Milton’s sister, Mrs Isabel Marjory Hutchison (née Jarvis) has written a letter to their mother, dated 13 January 1943. In her letter, Mrs Hutchison writes about receiving a letter from Private Jarvis and gives family news.

History / Summary

Private Milton Richard Jarvis enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Force on 4 November 1942, after previously serving in the Australian Military Forces in New South Wales, the Northern Territory and South Australia and Victoria. He was posted to 2/9 Australian Infantry Battalion, and served with this unit in New Guinea. On 12 January 1943, Private Jarvis was killed in action. He is commemorated at Port Moresby Memorial, Papua New Guinea.
