Description

Oral history interview with Major Julian Toganivalu of the Fijian Military Forces, a Military Observer with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) attached to Observer Group Golan – Alpha (OGG-A) in 2019-20. Interview with Dr Aaron Pegram of the Australian War Memorial at Observation Post 51 (OP51) in the Israeli-occupied Golan region, 4 November 2019. Topics include: family military history, enlistment in Fijian Military Forces (Reserves) in 2000, transition to Regular Army and commission in 2005, deployments to Iraq (2007 & 2011), Egypt (2008), Syria (2013) and Israel (2019), popular perceptions in Fiji of Peacekeeping operations, working as a United Nations Military Observer, lessons learnt from previous deployments, capture and release of 45 Fijian soldiers by Syrian militant group in 2014. Overview of Fijian contribution to UNTSO in both Israel and Syria, UNIFIL in Southern Lebanon and Multinational Force and Observers in Egypt. Comments on working with Australian peacekeepers, daily routine, keeping in contact with home, plans after returning home, thoughts and reflections on UNDOF mission success.
