Description

Silopi Region (border of Turkey and northern Iraq). 1991-06. A line of ambulances used for medical evacuation. As part of the multinational response known as Operation Provide Comfort, the vehicles contributed to the operations of the British Army Medical Squadron treating Kurdish refugees fleeing Iraqi forces in the wake of the Gulf War. Under British operational control were the four medical teams of the Australian Service Contingent (as part of Operation Habitat, Australia's contribution to Operation Provide Comfort). According to Major Jon Hodge, the Contingent made great use of the British pediatrician and infectious diseases physician, as well as the ambulances such as those pictured and a Black Hawk helicopter of the United States Army 159th Air Ambulance Company (see P01762.013).
