Description

The arid surrounds of Qalat township dominated by the Qalati Ghilji/Alexander the Great's Fortress. A local Shepherd and his flock of goats can be seen centre of image crossing the road showing no interest in the low level flight on approach to Qalat FARP. One of a series of images captured by Captain Jason Otter during an eight hour CSS Mission to Zabul Provence, Afghanistan known as the Aqua Ring Route. The mission flown in Australian Army Chinook A15-201 included a second US CH-47D and escort AH64 Apache. The Aqua Ring departed Kandahar for the Forward Arming and Refuelling Point (FARP) at Qalat, then to the outlying Forward Operating Bases of Baylough, Deh Chopan and Mizan before returning to Kandahar. The mission coincided with High Density Altitude Training for Lieutenant Ryan Bullock and a flying milestone of 5000 hours flight time for Capt Otter.
