Memoir relating to service of Hugh Rayson, 1942-1945
Description
Handwritten memoir relating to the Second World War service of NX34706 Major Hugh Rayson MC, 2/10 Australian Field Ambulance. The memoir starts on 16 February 1942 with Rayson’s capture after the fall of Singapore and continues until his release on 11 September 1945. It gives an account of his prisoner of war experiences at Changi concentration camp, Adam Road as medical officer in charge of establishing a troop hospital, the Sandakan camp and the Kuching camp. Rayson focusses on the treatment of POWs by the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) and the continual medical problems in each camp. There is a particular emphasis on the inadequate food and medical supplies, hygiene, and poor working conditions.
