Description

Diary relating to the Second World War service of NX35005 Brigadier Arthur Leslie Varley, 22nd Australian Infantry Brigade. The diary covers the period from 1 December 1941 - 18 June 1942, and details his time as commander of the 2/18th Battalion before the surrender of Singapore as well as conditions, work, movements and a list of battle casualties for officers after the surrender.

This diary was buried at Singapore for safe-keeping before the embarkation of prisoner to Japan on board Rakuyo Maru and were recovered by the AIF after the war.
