Gerson Family collection
'31 Dez. 1938. Ein letztes Haendedrnek, ehe de Zug with in Bewegnnin setzt, Alles Gnte Winsiht D:; Dein - Soh Wages Theodor und Else.' The Gerson sisters, Selma Gerson, Adele Gerson, Berta Gerson and Herta Lewinsky (nee Gerson) at Berlin Zoologischer Garten train station. A nurse in the Imperial Germany Army in the First World War, Adele Gerson continued her career in Berlin after the war until the increasing persecution of the Jewish people led her to leave Germany for employment at the Royal Cancer Hospital in London. This photograph was one of a series that captured her departure, and the last occasion on which the Gerson sisters were together. Adele emigrated to England and later Australia, while Selma, Berta, and Herta perished as a result of the Holocaust.
