Diary and memoir by John Hampden Barton
Binder relating to the First World War service of Lieutenant John (Jack) Hampden Barton, 54th Battalion. This binder contains a typed diary and memoir titled 'One Year With the Platoon' by J.H. Barton with handwritten forward inscribed on 15 February 1964. It is an account of a Platoon Commander and diary entries document active service during the period 12 October 1917 - 3 October 1918. The diary covers active service at Ypres, Messines area, Hill 104 at Villers-Bretonneux, Hamel, Peronne and the breaking of the Hindenburg Line. The account discusses the 54 Battalion 'strike' in September 1918. He details the action by Lieutenant Alexander George Bates on 14 March 1918 for which he was awarded his Military Cross (no recommendation on file). Note: pages 75-78 have been bound at the front of the binder.
