Maralinga Story
Description
This drawing by senior Yankunytjatjara artist Alec Baker tells the story of the impact of the weapons testing program at Maralinga on the Country and the people. Although he was a young adult at the time of the 1950's bombings, Alec still feels deeply about the horrific events; he is influenced by the memories of his friends and family who were killed or injured and the devastation the bombing caused to his country.
Baker uses forms and imagery that blend into one in order to create a strong sense of disruption. This is true in the overall theme of tragedy which highlights a very sad story. In Alec's words, "It's important to keep talking about that story, so that we don't forget, so it never happens again."
