Description
Loose page handwritten diary relating to the First World War service of 1187 Sergeant Clarence Herbert Dakin, 20th Infantry Battalion. Written between 15 August 1915 and 12 March 1916, this diary covers his service at Gallipoli, in particular: his arrival; snipers; artillery including Beachy Bill; rations; storm damage on the beach in November; general weather conditions; German and Allied planes; Walker's Ridge; scenery; visiting the cemetery and the evacuation. He then describes his post-evacuation moves to Tel-el-Kebir and Ismailia including: mail backlog; Christmas in Mudros; camp routine; leave in Cairo and preparation for moving to the Western Front.
