ESPIRITU SANTO, NEW HEBRIDES. 1943-07-23. PORT SIDE VIEW OF THE AFTER PART OF THE CRUISER HMAS HOBART (I) SHOWING DAMAGE SUSTAINED WHEN THE SHIP WAS TORPEDOED BY A JAPANESE SUBMARINE. NOTE HOW THE QUARTERDECK HAS BEEN SEVERELY DISTORTED BY THE FORCE OF THE EXPLOSION. THE HOBART IS CARRYING 20 MM OERLIKON AA GUNS ON THE AFTER SUPERSTRUCTURE AND ON THE CROWN OF Y TURRET. A TYPE 271 RADAR LANTERN IS FITTED AMIDSHIPS. IN THE RIGHT BACKGROUND IS A DESTROYER TENDER OF THE US NAVY WITH DESTROYERS ALONGSIDE. (NAVAL HISTORICAL COLLECTION).
