Description

When Australians erect the goalposts for Aussie Rules football in Terendak Garrison, Malacca, Malaysia, other Commonwealth soldiers look on in disbelief. Aussie Rules may not be the most popular game in the 28th Battalion, but when Royal Australian Regiment's "B Company Bombers" take the field, it is a certain show-stopper. The "Bombers" were raised at Woodside, South Australia, before 4 RAR was posted to Malaysia. Among the team are many players who ran with big clubs back home. Lance corporal Alan Lewington, of Perth, was a Swan Districts player before entering the Army for his National Service. He recently won the "Bombers" best and fairest award. Private John Borkowski, of Perth, was also a Swan Districts player before joining the Army. Another team member, Private "Blue" McKenzie, of Swan Hill, Victoria, played for Geelong's under-19 squad when he was a civilian. The players are mostly all round sportsmen. Lance-Corporal Lewington is the battalion high jump champion and a strong sprinter. Lance-corporal Winston Gregory. of Adelaide, is one of the battalion's best cricketers and was recently selected to play in the Malacca State Cricket XI. He also holds the 4 RAR heavyweight boxing title. Many other players like Private Floyd Ronan, of Albury, NSW; Private George Martini, of Werribee, Victoria; Private Peter Lee, the team captain, of Launceston, Tasmania, were top-class footballers before coming to Mayaysia. One of the "Bombers" staunchest supporters is Warrant Officer Robert "Jock" Richardson, of Sorrento Victoria. WO2 Richardson ids B Company's CSM. He recently wrote to several VFL clubs requesting Aussie Rules footballs. Essendon VFL club sent twoo balls to the "Bombers". The "Bombers" play inter-company matches within the battalion and have also played exhibition matches against Australia's 110th Light Anti-Aircraft Battery, based at Butterworth in Malaysia.
