The scene is the HQ of the Free World Military Assistance Organisation in Saigon, South Vietnam. It was here this week that 52506 Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2) Leslie Daniel Osborn, of Mount Lawley, WA received the Military Medal (MM) for bravery. WO2 Osborn an adviser with the Australian Training Team in Vietnam, was presented the medal by the Australian Ambassador to the Republic of Vietnam, Mr Lewis Border. The presentation was held on the Free World HQ building patio and included a parade of personnel from Australian Force HQ. The official presentation party included Mr Border,the Commander, Australian Force Vietnam, 370 Air Commodore Jack Dowling and the Military Attache to the Ambassador, Colonel J M Maxwell. WO2 Osborn's citation read: "In recognition of his bravery and professional skill in Thua Thien Province, Vietnam on May 29 1965, when largely through his efforts the life of an officer was saved." The officer was US serviceman, Captain Paul Chalmers, who was wounded in action. Both he and WO2 Osborn were on operations with a South Vietnamese unit when it was ambushed by a North Vietnamese force estimated at battalion strength. WO2 Osborn who is 45 years of age, is serving his second year in Vietnam. Previously he was an adviser in the country from August 1964 to August 1965. He first joined the Army on 8 January 1940 and has since served in the Second World War and Korea. Shows Free World Military Assistance Headquarters Saigon. Flags of the Free World Group.
