Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of 418279 Flying Officer Frank Pelham Just DFC, bomb aimer, No. 10 Squadron RAF, Bomber Command, 1943-1945.

Just enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in May 1942. He received training at 5 Recruit Depot before being selected for aircrew. Just qualified as a navigator, air observer, and astro navigator in late 1943 and, following additional advanced training, was posted to No. 10 Squadron RAF as a bomb aimer from September 1944. Based at RAAF Melbourne in Yorkshire, No. 10 Squadron was part of Bomber Command and was tasked with night-time bombing raids over Germany. The collection includes Just's flying logbook, which was used to document his more than 300 hours of flying training and a full tour of 32 sorties totalling 194.25 operational hours flown between September 1944 and April 1945. Just participated in particularly hazardous attacks on the heavily defended targets of Cologne, Gelsenkirchen, and Essen during his operational tour and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) in 1945.
