Group portrait of WAAAF members of the Central Bureau of Intelligence with Wing Commander (Wg Cdr) H Roy Booth (third from left) and Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) FA Ward (second from left). Wg Cdr Booth was Deputy Director of the bureau which was involved in the interception and decoding of Japanese military signals. Many of the WAAAFs were skilled Kana Morse code intercept operators who had intercepted Japanese signal messages from June 1942 (at Point Cook Royal Australian Air Force base), through to 1943-44 (at No 1 Wireless Unit, Townsville) and finally at Brisbane (Central Bureau).
