Truck 1/4 Ton 4x4 GS, jeep : Australian Army Military History Section
Truck 1/4 ton 4x4 general service Jeep. This 'Borneo jeep' is painted green with the Australian Army registration number, 161881 stencilled on the bonnet sides. It has the serial number 222713. The vehicle has been fitted with flanged railway wheels to represent Australian light railway operations in North Borneo during 1945.
This vehicle was used by the Australian Army Military History Section and is one of approximately 16,500 jeeps supplied to Australian forces during the Second World War. Post war, it continued to be used by the Military History section until 1947 when it was transferred to the Australian War Memorial. This vehicle originally carried the United States Army registration number, 20586452. It has been fitted with flanged railway wheels to represent the locomotive element of a jeep train, which were used in transport operations in North Borneo in 1945. A jeep locomotive usually hauled one flat car or one covered wagon. Jeep trains were used until more substantial locomotives and rolling stock could be acquired.
