Description

Pair of women's brown leather lace-up shoes with 5 pairs of plain punched eyelets (not metal rimmed), brown cotton laces with celluloid aglets, and flat stacked heels held in place with wooden pegs. The shoes are lined with leather. A double row of stitching across each toe mimics the appearance of a toe cap. The toes and quarters are stamped 'M [broad arrow symbol] F'. The soles are marked in ink '[broad arrow symbol] R'.

History / Summary

Munitions workers were provided with uniforms that had no metal parts to minimise the risk of accidental reactive explosions in the factory. Uniforms worn in the so-called 'danger' areas of factories - the cordite, fuze, detonator and cartridge bundling sections - were called 'danger building suits'.

Specification standard 16 shoes had no metal parts and were held together with stitching and wooden pegs (also called springs)
