WEWAK AREA, NORTH EAST NEW GUINEA. C. 1945-06. IN ORDER TO RESCUE AN AMERICAN PILOT, LIEUTENANT (LT) J. P. CARTER, WHO HAD BALED OUT OF HIS LIGHTNING AIRCRAFT NEAR ENEMY-OCCUPIED TERRITORY, TWO NATIVE POLICE BOYS WERE FLOWN INTO THE AREA IN A RAAF AIR-SEA RESCUE FLIGHT SUPERMARINE WALRUS AMPHIBIAN AIRCRAFT WHICH LANDED ON THE KERAWARI RIVER NEAR THE PILOT'S LOCATION. PADDLING SWIFTLY, THE TWO NATIVE POLICE BOYS MADE FOR THE SHORE IN AN INFLATED DINGHY. THEY WORKED UNDER THE DIRECTION OF AN AUSTRALIAN NEW GUINEA ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT (ANGAU) REPRESENTATIVE, LT JOHNSTONE. SO THICK WAS THE KUNAI GRASS THAT IT TOOK THE NATIVES AN HOUR TO HACK THEIR WAY WITH MACHETES TO LT J. P. CARTER 250 YARDS AWAY AND THEN BRING HIM BACK TO THE AIRCRAFT FOR THE RETURN FLIGHT TO BASE.
