History / Summary
Sample of wood pulp used both in Germany and on the Western Front during the later years of the First World War as an additive for flour when shortages were affecting the German economy and their ability to continue waging war. This sample was recovered by the 2nd Pioneer Battalion AIF from a German Field Bakery at Biaches during the August 1918 offensives and was likely employed in the baking of bread.
