Maxim Model 1905 Machine Gun
Description
Russian Maxim Model 1905 Heavy Machine Gun. The gun has a blackened brass water jacket and is complete with a brass feed block and fusee cover marked 1907 with the manufacturer's name Tul'skiy (Tula) Arsenal. The breech cover has a large brass S rivetted to the top cover and there is an armoured front shield at the muzzle. Painted on the jacket top is 'Captured by the 52nd Battn 27-2-18'.
History / Summary
This gun was captured from the Russians by the Germans, and converted from the original 7.62 mm to the 7.92 mm calibre. It was captured in turn by the 52nd Battalion on the 27th February, 1918, at Hill 60.The large 'S' on the top cover indicates that it was converted to take Spitzer (pointed bullet) ammunition.
