Description

105 mm howitzer, with a two wheel carriage, split trail folding trail and a splinter-proof shield. Recoil system is hydro-spring controlled. Rate of fire: 5 rounds per minute, with a crew of 7. Breech: Vertically-sliding wedge. This particular howitzer bears the insignia of 105 Field Battery, 1 Field Regiment.

History / Summary

This gun was used by 105 Battery, 1 Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery (RAA) in Vietnam. On 18 August 1966, it provided fire support for D Company, 6 Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (RAR), during the Battle of Long Tan. While in service in Vietnam between May and April 1967, it fired 7393 rounds.

The L5 105mm Howitzer was designed as a weapon of sufficient versatility to cover the operational roles normally performed by several different types. It can be disassembled into small parts for transport by mule train, man pack, parachute, helicopter and aircraft. The gun uses the US M1 ammunition system.
