JERVIS BAY, ACT. STARBOARD BOW VIEW OF THE FRIGATE HMAS MURCHISON (F442) AS SHE CROSSES ASTERN OF HER SISTER SHIP HMAS CULGOA IN THE COURSE OF AN ANTI SUBMARINE EXERCISE OFF JERVIS BAY. SHE IS ARMED WITH 4 INCH MARK XVI GUNS IN TWO TWIN MARK XIX MOUNTINGS. NOTE THE LAUNCHING RAILS FOR ILLUMINATING ROCKETS ON THE FORWARD MOUNTING. THE 40 MM BOFORS AA GUNS PREVIOUSLY MOUNTED BESIDE THE BRIDGE STRUCTURE HAVE BEEN SUPPRESSED BUT THE TWO MOUNTED AFT REMAIN. A HEDGEHOG ANTI SUBMARINE MORTAR IS SITED JUST AHEAD OF THE FORWARD 4 INCH MOUNTING. TYPE 293P AIR/SURFACE RADAR IS FITTED AT THE TOP OF THE TRIPOD MAST AND TYPE 276 SURFACE SEARCH RADAR ON THE PLATFORM HALF WAY UP THE MAST. A TYPE 285 FIRE CONTROL RADAR IS FITTED TO THE DIRECTOR ABOVE THE BRIDGE. (NAVAL HISTORICAL COLLECTION)
