Pattern 1917 Sword Bayonet and Scabbard
Pattern 1917 Sword Bayonet and Scabbard. The hilt is similar to the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield 1907 bayonet except that the cross guard for the muzzle ring is longer and the wooden grips which are held to the tang with two screw bolts, have two grooves cut accross the centre. The pommel with an oil drain hole has a mortise slot and locking bolt which secures it to the rifle nosecap. The single edged blade is polished and has a fuller on each side for about 300 mm (12 inches). The ricasso has British proof marks cancelled and is stamped US, REMINGTON within a circle and 1913 over 9.17. The scabbard is green leather with a blackened chape and locket that has a wire hook clip to attach it to the belt.
This bayonet was originally manufactured as a Pattern 1913 with British ordnance markings for the P14 rifle. During the First World War, it was one of a batch diverted for American use and has the British ordnance marks crossed out. It was issued for use in September 1917.
