Description

During his current tour of South East Asia, the Australian Army's Chief of General Staff, Lieutenant General Sir John Wilton, stopped over in Borneo to visit the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, which is patrolling the Kalimantan-Sarawak border. After examining a newly completed airstrip at Bau, near the Battalion's headquarters, Sir John flew by helicopter, with another as escort, over the jungle and swamps to patrol bases near the border. On the way, the helicopters passed over Camp Cambrai, home of the 3rd Battalion headquarters. At one of the patrol bases, Sir John was given an outline of base defenses and troop activities by company commander, Major Hughen Boyd, of Ivanhoe, Victoria. After inspecting other forward bases, he returned to Kuching to continue his tour. From Borneo, Sir John flew to Vietnam to visit Australian troops there. He will return to Australia via Manila, in the Philippines.
