SERIA, BORNEO. 1945-08-01. THE OIL WELLS AT SERIA WERE FIRED BY THE JAPANESE THREE DAYS BEFORE THE AUSTRALIANS LANDED AT BRUNEI. THE EXTINGUISHING OF THESE FIRES WAS CARRIED OUT BY MEMBERS OF 3 PLATOON, 2/3RD FIELD COMPANY, ROYAL AUSTRALIAN ENGINEERS, UNDER THE COMMAND OF LIEUTENANT E. B. UNDERWOOD. THEY WERE ASSISTED BY A LARGE NUMBER OF NATIVES UNDER THE CONTROL OF CAPTAIN BEUKEMA OF THE ROYAL ENGINEERS, NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES ARMY. SHOWN, CARRYING THE FIRST SECTION OF A STEAM PIPE CLOSE TO THE FIRE.
