Description
Collection relating to the First World War service of Gunner William Richard Roberts, Royal Navy, Dardanelles and Gallipoli, c.1914-1918. Collection consists of one small handwritten diary kept in an address book, as well as one typed transcript of a portion of the diary. The diary details Roberts' involvement in the Gallipoli landings at Gaba Tepe on 25 April 1915. Roberts piloted landing craft from the destroyer HMS Colne and the Derflinger. He remarks that during the landings it "became increasingly evident that someone was after my blood" so he began wearing an Australian slouch hat to change his appearance. The diary also includes short notes and tables of numbers probably related to Roberts' service.
