Sig Weller notes: "The clearing of the trees on both sides of the road was done by our engineers to provide a secure distance between the rubber trees and the roadway, so it would be just that little more difficult for the Viet Cong to launch an ambush. It’s difficult to launch an ambush on a convoy if you’re on the edge of the tree line a hundred metres away!"
