Collection relating to Sgt Hein Bergerhausen, Luftwaffe
Studio portrait of Sergeant (Sgt) Hein Bergerhausen, a Luftwaffe pilot who immigrated to Australia after the Second World War as an employee of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme. Sgt Bergerhausen was a nineteen year old apprentice mechanical engineer when he was drafted into the Luftwaffe at the outbreak of the war. He commenced training as a flight mechanic in Vienna before completing advanced pilot training in Bavaria. Specialising in precision flying for reconnaissance and intelligence gathering missions, his small unit was attached to combat squadrons and reconnaisance units throughout the war. In 1951 he accepted a two-year contract with the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority. Hein's wife Sybille and daughter Brigitte immigrated to Australia the following year and the family settled in Cooma, NSW.
