Lieutenant William Hopkin 'Hop' James MC, 1st Light Horse Regiment, has written on the verso of this version of the photograph "This is a snap of some of the 3rd Brigade practicing a charge. You will see that every man has his bayonet in his hand. This will give you an idea of how we go into action. If it was the real thing you would see riderless horses and horses going down. Also shells bursting among the horses." A subject of controversy, this photograph possibly represents a re-enactment of a charge for a cinematographer when a brigade was staged near Belah in February 1918. The Australian War Memorial holds other versions of this photograph at A02684 and P03723.001. These versions describe this as the charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade at Beersheba on the 31st October 1917, taken by a Turkish soldier whose camera was captured later in the day.
