Souvenir of the Great War with the Rail Corps France & Belgium
Drawing of 4 European flags , with a Naval ship above and three steamtrains from the Railway Corps below. The work is by E C Gareett, who served with the Australian Light Railway Operating Company and is a souvenir of his time with the Company in France and Belguim, given to . During the First World War , the Australian Light Railway Operating Company was part of the Engineers and served in England and on the Western Front. This work was in turn given by Horace Baldwinson to his wife Florence, who notes on the verso of the work ; 'Drawing by Sapper Gareett of our Company'. Horace Stanley Baldwinson , born in Saddleworth, South Australia in 1882, enlisted to serve during the First World War at Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. He served with the 2nd Australian Light Railway Coy. from March 1917 in France, returning to Australia in October 1919.
