Transcript of diary relating to the First World War service of Captain Reginald Harriman Heywood, Australian Army Veterinary Corps (AAVC). Entries cover the period 4 August 1917 to 17 July 1918 in which Heywood covers his journey across the English Channel to the AAVC base hospital at Calais, and day to day life which often involved cold and wet weather interspersed with frequent German air raids. He writes of the work of the AAVC in evacuating and treating sick and injured horses, and his transfer to the 4th Australian Mobile Veterinary Section (AMVS) closer to the front line near Hazebrouck, eventually becoming the commanding officer. Heywood also writes of the German offensive in March 1918, and the Australians fighting at Villers-Bretonneux in April 1918. This diary contains both Heywood's light-heated observations as well as his thoughts of a more serious nature.
